Less than two years after acquiring him from the New Jersey Nets, the Atlanta Hawks dealt Rory Sparrow to the Knicks during the 1982-83 season.

Sparrow, a starter in Atlanta, initially came off the bench for the Knicks, but cracked the starting lineup in his first full season with the team. A point guard, Sparrow averaged at least six assists per game from the 1983-86.

Sparrow and the Knicks made the playoffs in the 1982-83 and 83-84 seasons, losing in the Eastern Conference semifinals each year. However, a year after winning 47 games, the Knicks finished 24-58 in 1984-85 and won less than 30 games each of the next two seasons.

As the Knicks' backcourt became more congested, Sparrow's playing time decreased. Gerald Henderson earned the starting point guard role during the 1986-87 season, and the Knicks added another point guard, Mark Jackson, in the 1987 draft. Sparrow was dealt in November 1987 to the Chicago Bulls.
