"Sweetwater" Clifton signed a contract with the Knicks prior to the 1950-51 season and became one of the the first African-American players in NBA history.

Clifton, who played for the Harlem Globetrotters for several seasons before landing with the Knicks, averaged 8.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game his rookie season. He averaged a double-double his second and third seasons in the league, and in 1957, at 34 years old, made his first All-Star Game.

The Knicks made it to the Finals each of Clifton's first three years in the league and lost each time. In six of Clifton's seven seasons, the Knicks made the playoffs.

The Fort Wayne Pistons acquired Clifton with Dick Atha and Harry Gallatin for Mel Hutchins and Charlie Tyra in 1957.
