The Knicks purchased the rights to John Gianelli several months after the 6-10 forward was selected in the second round of the 1972 NBA Draft.

In his first year on the team, Gianelli and the Knicks finished 57-25 and won the NBA Finals. "G-Man" averaged 3.6 points and 1.9 rebounds during the playoff run.

Gianelli spent most of his first two years coming off the bench before cracking the Knicks' starting lineup during the 1974-75 season, when he averaged career highs in points (10.3) and rebounds (8.6) in 35 minutes per game.

The Knicks dealt Gianelli midway through the 1875-76 season to the Buffalo Braves for Bob McAdoo and Tom McMillen.

After his NBA career ended in 1980, Gianelli played for Italy's Olimpia Milano for several years. During his time in Italy, former Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni was also on the roster.
