The Knicks acquired 32-year-old Derek Harper during the 1993-94 season for a future first-round pick. Harper, who was in his 11th season, had averaged at least 16 points per game in the previous seven seasons for the Mavericks.

Harper split time starting at the point with Greg Anthony and Hubert Davis after the trade. In the playoffs, his role increased, with Harper averaging 11.4 points in 32.6 minutes per game. The Knicks advanced to the NBA Finals before falling to the Rockets in seven games.

For the rest of his Knicks tenure, Harper served as the team's starting point guard. He started all 162 games he appeared in during his two full seasons with the team, averaging 11.5 points and 5.7 assists in 1994-95 and 14.0 points and 4.3 assists during the 1995-96 season. The Knicks made the playoffs each season, but were twice bounced in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

During the 1996 offseason, the Knicks released Harper.
