Channing Frye was drafted No. 8 overall, two picks before high schooler Andrew Bynum, by the Knicks in 2005.

Frye played in 65 games (14 starts) as a rookie and averaged 12.3 points and 5.8 rebounds in 24.2 minutes per game. He was named to the All-Rookie first team.

In 2006-07, Frye took over the Knicks' starting power forward role. Although his minutes increased, Frye's production decreased. He shot at a lower percentage and averaged fewer points and rebounds than his rookie season. The Knicks struggled to a 33-49 record and missed the playoffs for the third straight year. That was only the second time in 40 years where the Knicks missed the postseason three straight seasons.

The subsequent offseason, Frye was traded with Steve Francis to the Portland Trail Blazers. In return, the Knicks received a package headlined by Zach Randolph.
