The Knicks drafted Bill Cartwright, a 7-11 center, third overall in the 1979 NBA draft, two picks after Magic Johnson.

Cartwright picked up right where he left off at San Francisco (where he averaged 24.5 points and 15.7 rebounds his senior year), averaging what would be career highs in points (21.7) and rebounds (8.9) his rookie season. The big numbers earned Cartwright a spot on the All-Rookie Team, and his lone trip to the NBA All-Star Game.

His second season, Cartwright again put up solid numbers, averaging 20.1 points and 7.5 rebounds in 82 games. While he never averaged more than 20 points in any other season. he remained a very efficient option on offense, shooting at least 56 percent from the floor each of his next three seasons. He also put up 17.0 points and 8.4 rebounds per game during the 1983-84 season.

Injuries kept Cartwright off the court all of the 1984-85 season, and all but two games of the 1985-86 season. By the 1987-88 season, he was backing up young center Patrick Ewing.

Cartwright was traded for Charles Oakley in 1988 to the Chicago Bulls , where he'd go on to win back-to-back-to-back titles in 1991, '92 and '93.
