Mason was named Sixth Man of the Year following the 1994-95 season. He averaged 9.9 points and 8.4 rebounds, coming off the bench in 66 of 77 games. The following season, Mason started all 82 games and set a franchise record by playing 3,457 minutes. He averaged 42.2 minutes per game, one of three seasons in which he averaged at least 40. Mason put up his best numbers as a Knick that season, averaging 14.6 points and 9.3 rebounds.

During the 1996 offseason, Mason and Brad Lohaus were traded to the Hornets for Larry Johnson.

After his career ended, Mason often was seen at games of St. John's, where his son, Anthony Mason Jr., played from 2005-09.
