Community Profile

The thriving community of Merrick offers an abundance of amenities, from retailers and professional services to restaurants, marinas, a senior center and several houses of worship.

The chamber of commerce, which sponsors an annual fall festival and craft fair, is also involved in the area's downtown revitalization program, including renovations at the train station and along Merrick Avenue.

Tree-lined neighborhoods stretch from North Merrick to Hempstead Bay. Houses vary widely in size and style, including capes, Colonials, Tudors, and Spanish stuccos, as well as various styled ranches. Many homes sit on 60-by-100-foot lots, although some properties are larger. Well known neighborhoods include Merrick Woods, Merrick Manor, Wenshaw Park, The Gables, Lindenmere and the Campgrounds.

Overall, there are about 12,000 homes here, said Jim Pooley, owner-broker of Select A Home / Island South Realty Corp.

Recreational opportunities can be found at Cammanns Pond, Merrick Road Park Golf Course and the Norman J. Levy Park Preserve, which has an operational windmill and offers great views. Jones Beach is nearby.
