Community Profile
In one of his shticks, comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who grew up here, joked Massapequa was Indian for "by the mall." He was referring to what is now Westfield Sunrise Mall, which incidently has been making improvements.
The hamlet bordering South Oyster Bay is also popular for its restaurants, marinas and recreational areas, including John J. Burns and Marjorie Post parks, the 423-acre Massapequa Preserve and the Field of Dreams park on Old Sunrise Highway.
The Town of Oyster Bay has approved a new development, The Seasons at Massapequa, for 128 multi-family homes, 54 townhouses and 30 "next generation" housing units for first-time home buyers who will be selected by lottery. Residency and income restrictions apply; call the Long Island Housing Partnership at 800-528-8683.
