Community Profile

Tucked in the rolling hills of the North Shore, the hamlet of Locust Valley is described by Elyse Underberg, a resident and associate broker of the local Coldwell Banker Residential office, as a self-contained community with a New England feel.

The area's nucleus - Forest Avenue and Birch Hill Road - is dotted with boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and services, such as salons, banks, auto repair shops and cleaners.

An outdoor farmer's market at the Long Island Rail Road station sells fresh fruit and baked goods Saturday mornings from May to November.

Two well-known private schools make their home here as well: Friends Academy and the Portledge School.

Buyers can find mostly Colonials and capes, plus a mix of ranch styles. The size of houses and the parcels on which they rest vary. Rentals, including apartments over stores, also can be found.
