Community Profile

Spectacular water views of Long Island Sound as well as Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor dominate this claw-shaped peninsula, which is accessible by one road from Bayville.

Once beyond the village's entrance, where the police department is stationed, the natural landscape holds hidden mansions on rambling estates as well as smaller homes on half-acre parcels. "It's an elite island," says Sandi Lefkowitz of Daniel Gale Sotheby's International in Glen Head, noting people - the rich and famous - move here for the privacy.

Even so, some residents, such as composer and singer Billy Joel and media mogul Rupert Murdoch, have made headlines for their real estate dealings.

Currently, the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island Web site has 11 listings in Centre Island. These homes, which were built between 1900 and 2005, are priced between $899,000 and $14.5 million, with taxes ranging from $4,919 to $94,526. Some rates exclude a village tax.
