Community Profile
Selden is often cited for its affordable homes and ideal location: the center of Suffolk County, with ready access to communities east and west, as well as North Shore and South Shore beaches.
The community touts a renovated branch of Middle Country Public Library (the other branch is in Centereach).
A mixture of eateries, services and stores line Middle Country Road, many housed in shopping centers such as College Plaza, Independence Plaza and Selden Plaza. A few busy roads are scattered throughout quiet neighborhoods north and south of Middle Country Road.
"Our development is a real neighborhood with many of the original homeowners," said Allen Lang, who with his wife, Linda, moved to Selden 33 years ago.
Various ranch styles, as well as Capes, split-levels, Colonials and newer Victorians. "It's affordable in today's market," said Bill Chavis, a partner at Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate.
The Langs add that the area's modest taxes have allowed empty-nesters like them to remain in Selden during their retirement years.
The Catholic Charities' Housing Department also offers affordable housing to seniors and those with disabilities at the 200-unit St. Joseph's Village on Boyle Road. "There are a lot of activities for residents," said Robert Durnell, property manager. "The units are well taken care of, and we're always upgrading." There is a waiting list; income and other restrictions apply.
The Ammerman Campus of Suffolk County Community College is also located in the hamlet.
