Community Profile
The hamlet of Nesconset was one of the last sections in the Town of Smithtown to develop because it was so heavily wooded. And even though the community has grown, its natural ambiance has largely remained intact.
The area comprises tranquil neighborhoods, a few parks and small shopping strips.
Part of a 42-acre site on Smithtown Boulevard, where the long-vacant National Guard Armory sits, is being redeveloped. The Parks Department is in the process of building athletic fields, said Frank DeRubeis, director of planning for the Town of Smithtown. A few years ago, the town transferred the dilapidated main building to the library, which will also get 2.67 acres of the land around the site.
The Nesconset branch of the Smithtown Library, which is across the street in a shopping center, may at some point be relocated to the site. "A facility adjacent to the park would be a really nice centerpiece for Nesconset," said Bob Goykin, assistant library director. The village green, at the front of the property, has a new gazebo and 11 benches, a project of the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce, which will add a brick walkway.
Neighborhoods feature various ranch styles, capes, Colonials as well as newer Colonials and Victorians that sit on spacious properties. Prices range from $375,000 to $850,000, said Evan Greene, a resident and owner-broker of Hough & Guidice Realty Associates. Spot-built homes continue to sprout.
Recreational areas include Andreoli Park on Gibbs Pond Road, which has a freshwater pond, playground and ball courts. Sprofera Park on Browns Road and Route 347 was renovated two years ago, and offers a playground, roller hockey rink and ball fields.
Nesconset Day draws about 10,000 people. Festivities include free kiddie rides and car shows.
