Although Ronkonkoma and Lake Ronkonkoma share a ZIP code, the two hamlets are governed by different townships.

Ronkonkoma, which flanks the Long Island Expressway, is in the Town of Islip, and Lake Ronkonkoma to the north is split between Brookhaven and Smithtown townships.

For most residents, though, the boundaries are indistinguishable, says Dorothy Roman, co-president of the Chamber of Commerce of the Greater Ronkonkomas, who lives in Ronkonkoma.

Mike and Catherine Chironno, who live south of the expressway, enjoy taking their young daughters to Lake Ronkonkoma, which was formed by a glacier about 20,000 years ago. "It's great for summer activities," Mike Chironno says.

Ronkonkoma is probably best known for its trains and planes. The Long Island Rail Road station in Ronkonkoma lured commuters from miles around once the track became electrified. "I've been on that train at 5 a.m., and it's packed," Roman says.

The Town of Islip's Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma is recognized as one of the top five regional airports in the country. The area has a strong business community. "You can find whatever you want in a 5-mile radius," says Charles Rohde, associate broker at Prudential Douglas Elliman. "What's not to like?" said Catherine Chironno, who grew up here.

Housing includes capes, ranches, high-ranches, Colonials, contemporaries and newer Victorians. The market, he said, is active, but buyers are taking longer to make up their minds.

In addition to the lake beaches, the area has a recreation center, senior center, ball courts, playground and a picnic area.

Residents can also use Hidden Pond Park in nearby Hauppauge, where there is skating, hockey and a day camp. And Connetquot River State Park is nearby. The chamber, which has been instrumental in beautification programs, hosts numerous events throughout the year.
